A lot of people yell "Pharisee" at Christians without really knowing what it was about them that Jesus criticized. For some reason they selectively read the passages and think that He was criticizing them for demanding strict adherence of the law. That wasn't His issue with them at all. What he criticizes them for was their outward appearance of holiness that belied their inner wickedness. They made a show of the laws they followed and heaped extra helpings of ritual on top to make even more of a show of their piety; but they didn't love God and they didn't teach others to love God. I hear so much about how God loves us and everyone all the time but very little is said about how we are to love God. And THAT was the great sin of the Pharisees.
